Hi,

... I'm planning to build a more rigid and software-controllable pan-tilt setup with the spare parts from a dental scanner - this are more 'proffessional' parts, but maybe some inspiration for DIY too.

- the pan table with high precision gearbox-DC-motor with encoder:

- the tilting arm with fixtures for two cams and a line laser or small LED-beamer:

- a small pan-tilt-table with a special code-plate on the underside for detecting it's exact position and orientation:

... in addition to the previous post ...

- the code-plate on the bottom and the cam used to scan the dot-grid:

- and this is, what the camera is scanning:

... the codes are unique over the complete plate and can be calculated by software, so the position and angular orientation of the base-plate in respect to the center of the pan-table can be measured with maybe 1 micron accuracy in XY or angular ...

... here's another simple, but capable sytem for free positioning a camera in respect to the target:

The two arms are telescopic and can be adjusted and fixed separately, so the camera can be tilted too ... or adjusted horizontally ...
