Hi Raya,

The RS232 protocol may be demoded but it is currently the method that the arduino software uses to talk to the arduino boards. The software is designed to send rs232 serial data and a DTR reset signal over a COM port so it doen't matter weather you use the method I mention or make a true arduino with an ftdi chip. They both do the same thing.

For me it was okay. I picked up the max232 for about $1.00 and the adaptor for about $4.00. http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.25273

Hi

I found FT232RL(small queen) but not MC33269D-5.0 ,seems need to sunstitu with another 3 pin voltage regulator with same specifications.

As Walter mentioned FT232Rl dimesions ,it is very difficult to solder it to board .

Can I use Atmega32 instead of Atmega328 ?

Hi Greg

Duino232 worth for me to try it ,but have some problem with it ,first I didn`t find Atmega168 but find Atmega8 avalaible here,is there any bootloader for it ? or may I use Diecimila bootloader for it ?

Hi Ray,

Atmega8 definitely works. It is what I use. You can not use the Decimila bootloader though or you will get an error telling you it is the wrong chip. In the Arduino software go to TOOLS -> BOARD and select Arduino NG or older w/ ATmega8. this will set the software for both burning the bootloader and uploading sketches. Be aware though that the NG bootloader takes about 8 seconds to boot after reset.

Hi Greg

Capacity of C4,C13,C14,C15 is not clear for me ,are those variable capacitors ?

Hi Ray,

I have built both a max232 and a max3232 circuit. For the max232 I used 1uF 50V electrolytic capacitors but for max3232 you can use smaller caps. I used the common 0.1 uF ceramic capacitors. They are marked 104 for 100,000pF. If you use max232 take care to place the capacitor's polarity correctly.

Hi Greg

Can I use Max3232 with this board also ? what is pereferage of using it ?

What about other capacitors need to change also (for max3232) ?

Hi Ray,

Yes the max232 and max3232 are pin compatable so no problem using either on the board. I believe the main difference is the max3232 can run on a 3V and use smaller caps. You should double check the datasheets though. The first arduino I made was from parts I ordered from sparkfun and they had max3232 available but the atmega8 arduinos I made from parts purchased from a chinese retailer on ebay and they only had max232. It was advantageous in that I simply wanted everything in one shipment.

I used the same cap for C4, C13, C14, and C15. No other caps on the board need to be changed.

Hi Ray,

Sorry, I don't have any experience making PCBs. Maybe you can delete all the layers you do not need and then try exporting?

Hi Greg

Seems that Duino board has finished (not checked now) ,thank you ,but I want to know did you install CRS capacitor a bit up than crystal also ? is it for 3.3 volt only ?
