Message Board: 3D Processing/Modeling Software

Postby Sven » Thu Jan 01, 1970 1:00 am

This topic is meant as a message board to collect interesting links to 3rd party software for data processing.
Please use this topic for your discoveries. Please do not start a new topic for each interesting link you find.

Of course, discussion is welcome. If something creates a discussion here, we will move it to a separate topic.

If possible, do not just post a link, but also a short description (what is special/interesting about it).

Thanks
Sven

PS: I have taken the liberty to move some older topics here.

Reducto: free polygon reduction (and more) standalone app

Postby Ordibble Plop » Mon May 14, 2012 11:32 pm

Wayne Robson has released ReDucto, a free, standalone polygon reduction tool. It looks like it might have some other features that could also be useful to scanners.

*Unique Polygon Reduction Algorithm using its own AI that works out how best to reduce the polycount of your mesh created especially for digital sculpts. It gives better results that anything around currently.
*Intelligent hole filling capable of filling 'impossible holes' other apps will reject
*Industrial strength tri stripping and un-stripping
*Bake Ambient Occlussion and Normal map data direct to your mesh at vertex level
*Mesh merging of high polycount datasets
*Find and Fix problems in your mesh such as rougue vertex, non planar faces many many more
*Fave, edge and vertex optimisation to enable faster loading times
*3 types of subdivision not found in most applications
*Customisable interface configurations
*Works with any application it is totally agnostic

He's also released MudWalker, which could be useful depending on the software you use.

Hello everyone,
have you tried RealityCapture? https://www.capturingreality.com/Home
Alternative software to: http://alternativeto.net/software/realitycapture/

RealityCapture is a state-of-the-art photogrammetry software which automatically extracts beautiful and accurate 3D models from images, laser-scans and other inputs.
It scales linearly, which especially makes it unique to anything else. This software is the only one to mix laser-scans and photographs easily without seams at astounding speed. The algorithms are out-of-core so you can reconstruct unlimited size models on limited hardware (a PC with just 8GB RAM). The models are complete and without seams. Of course, geo-referencing using ground control points, flight logs, gps in exif go without saying. There are also more advantages like camera-rigs support, arbitrary ortho-projections, nice and intuitive UI etc. The software also allows you to filter, simplify, texture, export model. You can also export -> post-process (retopologize, clean) -> import -> texture your models...

Have a closer look at what RealityCapture is capable of:
Reconstruction of a castle - interior, exterior, all in one model. 28 975 images of 36 or 80 Mpx resolution. 118 terrestrial laser-scans (Leica). It all has been processed on a single PC. The model consists of 1 500 000 000 (1.5B) triangles: https://youtu.be/E7LLELllus4.
