Volume of a 3D Model?

Volume of a 3D Model?

Postby AlexNoir » Thu Oct 31, 2013 12:00 am

Hey!

Do someone know a free software to calculate the volume of a closed 3D model? Meshlab or Cloudcompare?

Greetings,

Alex

Hello,
meshlab calculates the volume, meshmixer does also. There are other free programs like VisCAM View,Geomagic Verify, and GOM Inspect, which calculate volumes.
Best regards, Erhard

Meshlab:
use the "Quality, Measure and computation->Compute Geometric Measures" and look in the console window for results (activate layers to see console)

Hey! Tnx - I tried it, but it isn't working with all my models - all models are closed (with David and also extra again with Meshlab after it didn't work first time with the calculation) - all the time is coming something like this:
Mesh Bounding Box Diag 57.657700
Mesh Volume is -1.#IND00
Mesh Surface is 3635.088867
Thin shell barycenter -4.936380 7.150131 -0.431402
Center of Mass is -1.#IND00 -1.#IND00 -1.#IND00
Inertia Tensor is :
-1.#IND00 -1.#IND00 -1.#IND00
-1.#IND00 -1.#IND00 -1.#IND00
-1.#IND00 -1.#IND00 -1.#IND00

BTW - Mesh Surfaces means the m²/dm²/cm²/mm²?

But back to the main point: how came all the time the -1.#IND00?!

Please help 0.0

Hi Alex,

I have made some tests with my self-scanned objects. Not all work for a volume measurement with MeshLab. Important is during uploading in MeshLab that no warning occurs.

Simply download, for a test, the fine working DAVID OBJ angel (see the attached screen dump).
http://www.david-3d.com/?section=Downloads

Result in cubic millimeter.

Walter

Edit. Some time ago I scanned a small elephant, carved of teakwood:
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4291&p=27756#p27756

Weight: 76.5 grams
Specific gravity of teakwood: 0.64 gram per cubic centimeter
So its volume should be 119.5 cubic centimeter

Volume result from MeshLab: 122.8 cubic centimeter. Difference 2.7%.
