the standalone utility has been updated

Postby aiem » Thu May 26, 2011 12:41 am

Hi all, since the tool had been released, I had got several questions concerning .off files (http://www.geomview.org/docs/html/OFF.html). There are many freely distributed converters to this format (http://meshlab.sourceforge.net/), but many of them don’t store information about vertex normals, in other words, always produce files with header “OFF”. Taking this into account, new version 1.041 of the standalone utility has been released. It differs from version 1.40 only in interpretation of files with header “OFF”. Now it is considered that in such files vertex normals are implicitly defined by the triangle vertex order, in other words, it is assumed that the vertex order of each triangle correctly defines its “internal” and “external” sides (in a hypothetical case that a mesh breaks this assumption it should be normalized using a proper mesh processor). So, now files with header “OFF” can be used in cases, which require files with explicitly defined vertex normals (header “NOFF”) in version 1.04. See, please, also the correspondingly updated topic 2 of the manual (http://www.ae3d.ru/).

Regards,
Alexander

Hello,

I am having the exact same problem, I can't load the plug-in in Rhino 4.0

The plug-in does not show up in the plug-in managers list box. If I press the install button, I can browse to find the plug-in, but when I try to install, it simply fails.

My machine: Win 7 Professional SP1, 64B, Dual Quad Xenon, 16 GB RAM

Any ideas?

Kind Regards,

Joe

Gentlemen, the problem is in that 32-bit plug-ins don’t work on 64 bit platforms. The 64-bit plug-in version has been planned to release in the end of June, but due to numerous requests I’ll try to accelerate it as it is possible. It will be announced here.

Regards,
Alexander

P.S. But there is a chance that for Rhino 4.0 SR9 installed on a 64-bit platform this kind of incompatibility can be fixed just using some proper patch. I’ll clear it in few days.

Gentlemen, concerning the problem with 64 bit platforms I’ve got the following advice from the Rhinoceros Development group:

Have the customer install this:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/d ... 9C36F85647
and the “x86” version of this:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/d ... 12bab119c2
“.

May be it can improve the situation and for 32 ones (but really it is the first report about such problems on these platforms).

So, please, let me know if it helps.

Regards,
Alexander

Friends, the effective remedy has been found! Special thanks to Dale Fugier from Rhino development department! So, in addition to the patches recommended before, please install this:
http://support.microsoft..com/kb/2465367
and then this:

version 1.05 has been released

Postby aiem » Tue Jun 21, 2011 5:13 pm

Hi all, version 1.05 has been released. In this release a 64-bit version of the standalone utility is added. The main difference from the previous version is a more flexible and efficient implementation of the filtering step, that allows to repair meshes preserving sharp features. In general, the repairing becomes more robust and in some cases faster.
With the best regards,
Alexander

Hi, sorry for a delay, what system configuration do you have? Have you installed the included Microsoft redistributable library packages?

Hi, folks! Sorry for the somewhat late response, but I'm simply having trouble installing the tool to begin with. It simply doesn't open up. I've checked the task manager, but that doesn't help either. What is the program .exe file name?

Anyway, if I can get this program/plug-in working, that would be super helpful! I am interested in producing prototypes after all! I'm using Windows Vista on an HP Pavilion, 4GB of RAM, ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics. What could be wrong??? =(

Thanks!

Canoe,

If you are installing this under RHINO, then all I can say is that if you follow all the instructions and load the other required components, it work like a charm!

I cannot comment on the stand alone version.....and ALEX is very helpful if you continue to run into problems.
