How to: Create a 3D PDF

How to: Create a 3D PDF

Postby Victor.Lamoine » Thu Apr 21, 2011 9:40 am

Hello,
For those who are lost in creating 3D PDFs (like me an hour ago...) I will explain how to do it on Windows (works on XP !)

What you need :
- A 3D Object
-
- (this one is a portable version)

1. Open you mesh in MeshLab, export it to an .u3D mesh (it will create two files: u3D and .tex)

2. Extract MiKTeX and launch miktex-portable.cmd, an icon will appear on the bottom right, right clic on it and update (needed only the first time).
When its done, right clic on the icon and launch TeXworks, open the .TEX file created by MeshLab, you should have something like this :

3. Add a line like this to include the .u3d file inside the PDF ;

4. Clic on the START green button (install all packages needed if it asks !). A PDF should have been created in the .tex folder.

I hope it will help some of you creating nice PDFs ! I noticed that old acrobat versions often crash opening these PDFs, update to the last version !
If you have further informations, please share with us, I really don't know how to manage the 3D render windows (especially how to center it in the page)

During my presentation at the RUGSyd October meeting I promised to post this procedure
hope it makes sense - enjoy !

3d pdf creation from 3d dwf

Software checklist - what you need
Dwf authoring software (eg Revit, Navisworks, Autocad etc)
Adobe Acrobat 3d Version 8
Adobe Acrobat 3d Version 8 Toolkit

Placement checklist
It’s a good idea to have the pdf file ready into which you to place your 3d content

1) Export your 3d dwf from Revit

2) Browse and highlight the dwf file in Explorer, right click, open with (i.e. not convert to) Adobe Acrobat 8.1

3) In Adobe, right click over the opened file, edit in 3d Toolkit
(Adobe 3d Toolkit launches and creates temporary *.u3d file)

4) Start, Search, For files and folders, All files and folders, search for hidden files and folders, enter *.tmp.u3d and click search
(Windows searches and locates your temporary file created by 3d Toolkit)
Copy the file to your permanent directory and rename it to *.u3d.

5) In Acrobat 3d open the pdf file you wish to embed the 3d view into, go to Tools Advanced Editing, 3D Tool.
Drag across the area to create the position of your view and, then on the auto prompt,
Browse to your *.u3d file
Change the background colour to white (if required)
Change the default rendering style (I like illustration, but solid is be
