Michelangelo's River God

Postby hal » Wed May 04, 2016 3:00 pm

Hello davidians,
long time I didn't post nothing here. Today want share something is moving forward after a long-time pause.

in 2014 I've scanned a statue by Michelangelo Buonarroti: a sketch of a "River God" made in clay, a concept scultpure designed for the , Florence. The sculpture (and other three) weren't never sculpted in marble, so the steps of the funerary monuments are empty.
The original piece of art is at . In the past, the not-baked-clay sculpture, had a structural collapse and was moved in a wrong position: lied instead then sitted. The legs had breakcages on the hips and then fixed in a wrong position.

The Medici Chapel, the Original statue and an old photos that show the broken status

In this period the sculpture is under restoring in order to reveal the original surface finishing (white and not dark bronze as visible).
Because its fragile material, the statue can't be moved and to change its position,in order to assume the original shape: so we did a "digital mold", a copy by 3D scanner and a 3D printer.

The 3D mesh was edited and changed the position and the legs' orientation, in order to fit the original shape.

The 3D scan was moved in the original position of the statue

I sculpted a "support" that hold the statue in the new position. This "podium" should be similar to the not-finished marble of the others sculptures of the funerary monument.

The new "holder" sculpted in 3D.

The piece was printed in scale 1:1 (from neck to knees the statue measure 140 cm approx). The body is printed by in one piece. The base is a separated part. Both printed with .

The next step will be the coating of the surface in order to make it similar to the post-restauration sculpture's surface.

Hope you like it,
Best regards,
Mattia

Amazing work as usual, Mattia.

You are so lucky to be able to work with such amazing pieces of historical art.

Yes. Thanks for the post. Very Helpful. What scale did you calibrate the scanner to? As I posted last week I have a project scanning a large very intricate sculpture for a friend. I planned on scanning in sections but am having trouble deciding what size chunks to try first. I'm currently thinking of calibrating with the 300mm panels i have. What are your thoughts?

Thanks :D

@ micr0: I've scanned it long time ago, so not sure to remember correctly, but I thought it was 120 or 150 mm scale panels, in order to scan enough details.

Materialise told me that it took approx 3-4 days printing at 100 microns layers (I guess resin drying including). Soon as I will recive the specs from them I will post here.

Hello Mattia,

Very interesting project!
I have never seen such a big one-piece-print. Thanks for sharing.

Walter

PS. And yes, we like it.
