Surface Scan?

Postby dklassen » Tue Feb 02, 2016 12:16 am

Quick question (famous last words).

Here's the scenario. Want to scan an alligator skin that's about 10"x10" and use it to rap a CAD model as a 3D texture. For instance, a handle for a knife. The file would obviously be a .obj that's only a "surface" scan and not a watertight model.

Is this even possible?

Yes. But not the way you are thinking. The easiest way would be to create a bump map in Photoshop of a sized image of the alligator skin. Then providing your 3D package can read the bump map you will have what looks like a textured gator skin that you can wrap around the handle. Engineering CAD programs aren't usually good at this sort of thing. The more design and rendering oriented apps are (Modo, Maya, Rhino etc).

Importing and making a parametric item from an irregular surface would be a nighmare.

Micr0 is right.

Here is a Blender tutorial that uses an image to get a 3D texture.
