The shorter the distance of your object is, the "longer" must be the thickness of the extension ring. If you would buy a 0.5mm, a 1mm and a 5mm ring you will have a lot of combination capabilities. (=7).

But will the larger adapters included in the kits (10mm, 20mm, 40mm) be of any use?

I think the other rings (tubes) of 10, 20 and 40mm will not be useful for your purpose.
