Support for PLY format

Postby Victor.Lamoine » Thu Dec 18, 2014 11:12 am

Hello,

The OBJ format is an ASCII only format that does not support binary encoding; thus files are very big.
I would like to be able to save the scans in PLY format without having to convert them with a third-party software.

It supports every information that can be stored in an OBJ file (texture, normals etc..) and adds binary encoding to reduce file size.
For example an OBJ file that weights 160 Mo can be reduceBd to 118 Mo in binary PLY format; thats a 25% file size save.
The format definition can be found .

Hello

Thanks for your answer; I'll rephrase my feature wish:
I would like to be able to save single scans as PLY/STL files (not only with shapefusion) with support for binary encoding (at the moment PLY files are written in ASCII format)

but you already can
select the scans you want to save and hit the first save button below the list of scans and change to PLY or STL and save
if you mean the raw scan data should have the option to add to list as PLY or STL then that's a different thing than being able to save it.

You can save single scans as STL or PLY: Simply enter a file name ending with .STL or .PLY
We don't recommend that because those formats don't support textures, and because you cannot import those in Shapefusion.

New: In v. 4.2 DAVID will be able to import STL too.

PLY binary: You are right, we are saving ASCII.
It seems that PLY is rarely used. For which application do you need to export PLY, and cannot use STL or OBJ?
