I have a basic Microscribe which is handy for measuring but thinking a fixed laser and camera mounted around the tip, similar to the Microscan, would make it a very portable scanner. I have managed an interface in visual basic and can retrieve xyz and roll, pitch, yaw so I'd be using the laser set-up as a 2D profile and off-setting that against the xyz coords of the tip.

Would there be a way to use these values as an input to David?
