Need kind help with starting texture scan

Postby WP2016 » Sun Jun 12, 2016 5:31 am

Hello all,

I have scanned several models without texture. Now I am learning how to properly scan the texture and hope some of you may help with the questions below.

My hardware:
Camera - 1600x1200 4.6 frames per second, color.
Projector: the common asus one.

1) Do I click on the "White Balance" button under the texture menu after calibration?
2) When I click on the WB button, should I just place a white board in front of the camera?
3) I tried the above, when I scanned the object, it showed many rainbow line patterns and doesn't show the correct texture. Could it be a problem with the camera setting or the camera function?
4) Is there a way to treat the color camera as a monochrome and force the system to change scan mode if the color camera is defective?

I might be missing something or should have tried something else. Any suggestion is appreciated.

Regards!

Camera: Grasshopper 3 GS3-U3-28S4C-C (@ 1600 X 1200, 30 fps); Lens: 8-50 mm F/1.4.
Computer: USB 3.0, CPU: 2.6-3.5 GHz, GPU: 3G NVidia 970M, 32G RAM.

When you do your calibration David should do the white balance or color calibration at the end of the patterns. This is assuming your calibration panels are white (or white enough). You should start with that. I've never had to do a manual WB after the initial calibration.

Thanks for the response. I have some progress as I realize the camera setting under the Calibration menu does NOT carry automatically to the Texturing menu.

So after a successful calibration, I had to click Texturing, then adjust the setting of exposure and brightness to the same as the Calibration setting, then go into the camera properties and click on the white balance check box, then apply the changes (click on apply and get out of the dialog box).

Then I did a scan and the texturing works.

But I have one more problem, the color of the object is correct but I still have shaded rainbow pattern (sorry I don't know how to add pictures here). I don't know how I can get rid of it. In the Calibration menu, when I get into the camera properties, the color option is not for selection (so I assume it is always color mode).

Should I replace a camera?

Thanks.

Hi WP2016,
when you are writing a post, under a text box there are two tabs "Options" and "Upload attachment".
Go to Upload attachemnt > choose file > add the file and you will have your pic here in forum.
If you need to export a screenshot from the DAVID just press F12 key or "take screenshot " button.
Next to it you will find "Open screenshot folder". It should be fairly easy to do this.

Thanks for letting me know about putting images up. I am providing one scan of the calibration pattern to show the color rainbow I was talking about. I assume it's a camera issue and not a software issue, am I correct?

Anyways, I have placed an order for a better color camera, hope that will solve the issue. Thanks, all.

Your exposure time is 1/64. you should set it to 1/60 to be synced with the beamer. That could be the cause for your problems.

Thanks for the reply. I do need to pay attention to the shutter speed and its relation to the projector (system default at 60 Hz indeed).

Hi
Unfortunately All cameras with a rolling shutter sensors have some problems as you show it in the picture.
Try to Use a camera with global shutter system to get a nice texture or use image grabber with a professional camera like canon or nikon or ...

Good luck.

Narmella,

If that is the case in regard to Rolling Shutters, why is the David 4 Cam listed on several pages as having one? As I was going through and talking to Growshapes, they have stated and show online that the upgrade camera has a Rolling Shutter. Could it be that the software and/or frame rate now compensates for distortion?

The reason I ask is I'm considering purchasing the DMK23UX236, which seems close in comparison to the David 4 Cam. From all spec shown, including the shutter, they seem extremely close.

DAVID Cam 4 have a rolling shutter. I do not know how the software compensate that.

So the software does compensate for a rolling shutter then?

It would depend on the rolling shutter frequency (rsf). Recent CMOS sensors goes up to 100-210 + Hz, which is independent of exposure time. If the image processing takes an average within the exposure time (greater than 1/rsf second), the issue should be minimal. The original camera I used was a CMOS at low frequency, so the issue was obvious. I do agree a CCD camera would resolve this issue and I did choose to upgrade to a CCD camera (but it still have a varying white balance issue I need to solve).
