Problems, solutions and discussion about scanning with a video projector and stripe patterns.

My Scans Too.

Postby micr0 » Tue Apr 07, 2015 5:26 pm

I thought, that with Tibor, Narmella and others posting some of their results, it's about time I started a thread to show some of what I've been working on with David. Here are a couple of screen grabs of a block and cylinder head form a Mercedes OM660. These are still unfinished meshs as I will be adding a couple of additional scans to each to add detail or fill in some holes.

How many scans did you take from the block and cylinder head?

What scale did you use?

Thanks guys. I'll post again with the details for the block and head scans.

Here is the valve cover. This mesh is made from 32 scans most at 40deg from each other with a few to fill in holes. They were scanned on "quality, and the fusion resolution was set to 1000 with the sharpness set to 3. I used 25mm Calibration panels of my own making. More on the cal panels later as I have some tips for after making many. Maybe that will be a separate post....

Sorry I took so long to post this:

The engine block scans was made from 56 "quality" scans aligned and fused at 1000 with the sharpness set to 3.
I made 300 mm calibration panels that gave me a very good working area with which to rotate the subject around 2 axis. The dimensions of the block its self are about is about 450mm x 300mm x 250mm.

Today's Scan: This one gave me a surprising amount of trouble and I'm not really happy with the fusion results. the surface texture isn't good and the detail (especially in the recesses of the webbed areas is terrible.

Nice work though, not as easy as it looks for sure. There's definitely an art to it.

Today fun:

300mm calibration,
58 scans (quality setting)
3.5hrs of cleaning and aligning
Fused at 2000 sharpness +3

This one was one of the most difficult I've done so far

because of the deep cavities and the level of detail. I should have taken more scans as there are some pretty big holes that David filled awkwardly.

That's a nice scan. Looking at the Artec one feature of the software is what they call confidence mapping where the collection software high lights areas of the mesh where it needs more data to complete the model.
I often process meshes off line or away from my scanner and no matter how many scans of a model I seem to take I always have holes or areas I wish I has gotten more detail from.

Thought I'd update this thread a bit. David 5 with 2 cameras is great. Now that I've worked through a few issues I'm getting results that rival $30K systems (albeit slower and with a bit more work). This is a motorcycle transmission that I've been using as a test object for the last year or so. It has a combination of fine detail, smooth and rough surfaces and negative and positive features.

This mesh was made with ~72 scans on default quality and fused at 2000 with the sharpness set to 2
