Micro Scans

Postby benoy » Wed May 30, 2012 6:37 pm

Hello all,
This is a small 4 mm object with a 0.5 mm slot at one end. The most challenging aspect was scanning the inside of the slot. the hard ware settings were DAVID 3.2 Stick, 3M Pico projector with close up lens, DMK 31AF03 CCD Camera with 50 mm lens and 20 mm extension tube. Calib scale 7.17 mm. The scans were very good and the final finishig was done by Geomagic

Hello Dr. Benoy,
What a precise micro scan! Simply great! Never seen something similar on this forum. :D

It would be interesting to know how precise DAVID had scanned the micro bracket. Therefore could you please upload the scan to another software, maybe to MeshLab and measure a length with (MeshLab's) measurement tool?
Similar to my comparisons here:

Thanks

Hi,

very, very good work in such detail!!! I am interested in knowing how you could measure the calib. line of 7,17 mm so exact? What was the distance of projector and cam lense from object?

DerHenry,
Thanks for the compliments and for the mail. I didnot directly measure the calib scale. I took the calib pattern to Coral Draw. Scaled it down, then each individual dots and rings were made a little bold. I then did the measurement in the soft ware. That is how I got it so precise. Then I got a photo print taken from a Studio photo printer. Since you asked me the question I directly tried to measure using a vernier calipper The closest I could get was 7.5 mm. I disassembled the system for some thing else I will answer your questions and other details as soon as I finish the work I am presently doing.
Thanks again

Walter mo,
Sorry for being late in posting the measuements done in other soft wares. 3 picts showing the measurements done in in mesh lab and in Geomagic. The last one was done using the features option in Geomagic
Thankyou

Hi,
Nice to see the good accordance between MeshLab and Geomagic.

But what about the real value measured by means of e.g. a caliper gauge?

Hi Beno,

Can you please let me know where you purchased the lens for the pico projector? Also, could you please let me know where to purchase the 50mm lens and extension tube for the camera?

Many thanks,
Alex

Hi,

I bought all my lenses in ebay for a good price for my NEC NLP14LP projector and my Chameleon PointGrey cam which works fine!

Hope that this helps a little...

Alex.
I bought the lens assembly from a local Photography shop in India. It must be available in any photography shop. Or it is available online. (E bay) And the lens from the Fuginon dealer in India. Here is his web address http://www.menzelrobovision.com/. But derHenry reports that he bought it through e bay and it seems much cheaper. It seems that is a better option.

Hello all,
Sorry for the delay in posting the actual photograph of the friction lock placed in the vernier calipper. I fact I was about to take a photograph of it but it actually fell off my vernier and I lost it. Later I forgot about it. Now Walter mo reminded me of it. Thanks walter here are the details.
Thanks

Side view Actual Measured with a vernier calipper
Measured in Geomagic.
Measured in Mesh lab

All Measurements are in Millimeters
Front view

The actual measurement is 2mm
Geomagic gives th 1.9886 mm
Measlab 1.936 mm

Side View
Actual 1.34 mm
Geomagic 1.346 mm
Mesh lab 1.33 mm

The side view measurement may not be accurate as there are two arms and hold this small object in one of the arms of the caliper is difficult.
Thanks

These are very good agreements.
Thanks Dr. Benoy for the comparison measurements and for sharing the results.
Now it is proved that with a very precise calibration panel even micro objects can be SL scanned by DAVID with a great absolute accuracy. :D

Hello benoy,
what is your resolution on this object?
Or better what is the distance from point to point in the stl file?
It looks realy perfectly...

Sisi
I am not sure about the point to point distance. But if you tell me how to find that out, I'll do it I have time for that during this week. The perfection is with a little bit of editing --esp at the edges. But no major re work was done
