Import obj files

Postby nickg4000 » Sun May 01, 2011 9:51 pm

Hi. I'm trying to import .obj files created in Blender into Shape Fusion but it keeps telling me that they can't be loaded.
Do I need a .bmp file in the folder as well?
Any suggestions?

Thanks

Hi Nick,

Your obj file may be corrupt. If you can download Meshlab ( http://meshlab.sourceforge.net) and open the file.
If it opens, the file is OK. If the file is OK, then if you don't have the texture file then the obj should still open.
Can you attach the obj file to your next reply and I can check it out for you?

cheers

Hi Clive

Attached is an obj file that opens fine in Meshlab... It's only a point cloud - should it be given a skin?

Thanks for the help

Nick

Hi,

you´ve to mesh your pointcloud. Shapefusion import supports only meshed obj files.

Did a quick and dirty poisson reconstruction in Meshlab.

Import to DAVID works fine after that

I think you did not compute the vertex normals, this surface is weird, should be an apple !
I did a ball pivoting reconstruction after computing the normals, I assume this is not awesome, but far better than MagWeb

Filters > Normal, Curvature & Orientation > Compute normals for point sets
Filters > Remeshing, simplification & Reconstruction > Surface reconstruction: Ball Pivoting

I used a clustering radius = 10 and a angle threshold = 90
Then I smoothed the face normals to get something better.

You should use the Poisson reconstruction only with closed geometries because Poisson always create a closed mesh.
