Aligning Techniques- Spray Bottle Scan

Postby Khalid Khattak » Sat Sep 18, 2010 6:37 pm

Hi,
Today I made 9 scans of a spray bottle with manual rotation (unknown angles).. All with trigger object plane-less technique.. It was very difficult to all all the scans as the bottom portions of the bottle for all the scans were identical and symmetrical...

So I devise the way..
1- I merge scan 1 and 2 after alignment and saved as 12.obj in shapefusion
2- Merged 3 and 4 in shapefusion and saved as 34.obj
removed 1, 2 , 3 and 4 from the shapefusion window and imported 12,34.obj.
3- Merge 12.obj and 34.obj and saved as 1234.obj
4- The rest of the scans were coupled in the same way and finally i got a beautiful 360 degree scan..

I wonder if someone give us tutorial.... Many of us when joining the scan and the first and last scan when not merged correctly, we blame the calibration panel or our hardware..but actually the Merging and joining (stitching) of scan is a science and technique..so please share here what you do?

Hi Kahalid,

nice scans, compliments.

A possible align strategie

- duplicate all your scans. (>>>>>: set "A" and its brothers in set " B");
- erase all uniform parts (bottle) of all the scans of set A;
- Align all the remaining charakteristic, unique parts (spraypistol) of set A ;
- Align each "brother" of set B to the aligned ones of set A;
- Erase all scans of set A;
- Do a global fine registration of set B;
.... fuse

That would be my way to do it.

Wow,
Gunter.. Your this post is really very helpful.. The idea of duplicating and aligning seperatly is really great... I wish we have a little tutorial in PDF format in the WiKI so that all forum members get the help.. May be i do it if time permits..
However, it will be great if Mattia also contributes his aligning techniques as he has a vast experience aligning difficult broken objects...
Regards

Hi Gunter,

Which method do you often use for single scans? Pairwise fine reg. or contact pair or other?
